5 quick fire questions with Kirk Wood

Web Team Langley Church

Kirk Wood is SouthRidge’s newest staff member fulfilling the role of pastor of community engagement. He and his family came to us from Roswell New Mexico. They have been here since August and we thought it would be a great idea to ask him some quick fire questions to get some quick spontaneous answers. So here they are.

Quick fire questions with Kirk

Question 1: Your new office is Greg Loren’s old office? Did he leave anything behind? Does it smell funny?

Answer: [Sniffs the office air] No no, the office was in great condition. I love these shelves.  He did leave me 70 participant copies and 3 leader kits of the Fireproof marriage enrichment study (ironically starring another Kirk) and 29 copies of The Love Dare. There are several other books he left me, but these two take up their own shelf, so let me know if you want a copy. [Laughs] And what is interesting is how I inherited Greg Loren’s old office and he inherited my old home town. I think I got the better end of the deal, though I love Stratford.

Q2: If you had to choose between the two super powers invisibility or flight, which would you choose and why?

A2: I would choose flight. Flying would eliminate the “please place your shoes on the belt” scenario at the airport.

Q3: You enjoy Star Wars and doing impressions of Yoda to make your kids laugh, what other stuff do you and the boys do for fun?

A3: Our boys have very different interests. Brett likes to run with me and so lately we’ve been going for 3-4 mile runs together, usually at the McLeod Park track. Nate loves Lego and playing cards, so we play lots of Uno and build lego together. Both boys like our “He-man Time” which is their weekly individual time with me. We usually go somewhere special for a treat and spend some time talking about life and their interests. Fortunately, girls are just another kind of friend at this stage in life. [Laughs]

Q4: What’s the strangest things you’ve ever eaten?

A4: I would have to say alligator. Watch Swamp People on The History Channel sometime and imagine a restaurant run by those folks. That will give you some idea of the experience I enjoyed. I also tried reindeer meat in Norway around 1991, with rumours of the meat still being radioactive from the Chernobyl disaster. Go and Google “Chernobyl reindeer meat.” It was also a little different. I didn’t glow in the dark though, so that’s good.

Q5: If you could time travel and you could go back in time and give yourself some advice right after high school graduation, what would it be?

A5: Hmmm. [Pauses] I’d have a few things to say. If I forgo the funny and focus on big picture life advice I’d say, “Don’t take the first opportunity that comes along just because it looks promising. Take your time, really think it through, and seek out people who have way more life experience than you, and who see it differently than you do. Give them permission to push back on your thoughts about it and really pray through it. Then I’d say, “Look up an 8 year old little boy named Mark Zuckerberg in White Plains, New York and tell him you’ve got a really great idea for a website.”
